The Procedure 3Chapter Three:
It was at an undisclosed location that four figures were seated at a round table, locked in discussion.
"We have another promising mind to unplug," said the first man. He had been the one driving the nurse home.
"Yeah, but problem is, they're on to him!" the next man pitched in. "Do you know what happened to the nurse who processed him?"
"I heard," was the reply. "Command gave me a chewing out for it. They want us to ignore him. They're worried about him being a mole for the Seekers."
The only woman at the table piped in here. "Understandable. I second that decision. We can't run the risk of his trail leading right to the rebellion itself!"
"Fuck the Seekers, we can handle them!" The last, and largest, man boomed. "What do you think the Rebellion's been doing for the last twenty years?"
"My point exactly, Kane," responded the first speaker. "These kinds of risks are what we've had to endure."
"I admit it's true. But that was before the Seekers figured us out! We have to
The Procedure 2Chapter Two:
"Wake up, Nate. You need to start learning to use your Procedure sometime!"
Nathan awoke to find himself in his bed, his mother shaking him in an attempt to rouse him from his sleep. The whole thing still felt weird, even a week after the fact. While he was a quick study in relearning how to move with the new nervous system connections in place, his mind still had to wrap around the concept of his brain being plugged into a computer.
His vision recovered from its groggy state into clarity as he hoisted himself from his bed to his feet. His other senses came to him almost immediately after, and he followed his mother out of his bedroom. He could feel, somewhat, the other devices around him. The connection failed words, but he was starting to feel it.
With a thought, he replied to that feeling, and he could feel it again, slightly altered, as though his reply had input.
"Goddamit Nate, I kept the thermostat at 72 for a reason!" His mother's voice rang out again from the kitc
The Procedure 1Chapter One:
"So you really think he can be disconnected? I had him as Operative material the instant I saw his psych eval," asked the nurse later that night. She, and the man she was talking to, were both riding in a car driving along an Automated Freeway. It was the perfect place to hold clandestine conversations.
"Your eye for insight in people serves you well, yet again," replied the man, in his characteristic bass voice. "His files show he could be an effective infiltrator just about anywhere. He learns rapidly and absorbs information like a sponge does liquid, according to his education record. And the keen understanding of various things helps us already."
"Good. But how do we approach him?"
"Leave that to me." He grabbed the wheel, and with a turning motion indicated to the computer that he wished to change off the Freeway. The car obeyed its orders, steering onto the exit lane and ramping up out of the tunnel to street level. With his feet back on the pedals and hands ready to
Abandoned ChapelThe parish waits now,
the loneliness of corners
crawling outward on walls--
chipped away by the wind,
and held together
by silk spindles;
cobwebs align them like the membranes of memories,
the cut of a jewel in an broken window
against the sun
where beads of rain
gather in a mesh of strands
a new Mosaic
against the backdrop of a cemetery;
My eyes seek out the sermon
in close proximity,
paint no distance
between headstone and cloud;
elegies topple each other
in their climb to heaven
as light trickles
over the shade,
breathes a new glow over snuffed candles.
I feel the weight in these empty rows,
how a breath couldn't cease to be breath
in the midst of prayer.
